Transport Ministry: 11 airlines apply to operate flights to Baghdad airport; Eurowings to start Berlin link

The Transport Ministry announced that 11 airlines have submitted requests to operate flights to Baghdad International Airport, coinciding with the imminent start by German carrier Eurowings, part of the Lufthansa Group, of weekly direct flights between Berlin and Baghdad.

The director general of the General Company for Airport Innovation and Air Navigation, Ayteh Saad Karim, said that European interest reflects Baghdad Airport's ability to attract international flights.

He added that Eurowings will commence operating the Berlin–Baghdad route after its specialized committees complete the necessary procedures and operational requirements set by the airline.

Karim said: "The return of German and European carriers comes as part of the Transport Ministry's efforts to enhance the status of airports within a diversified air connectivity network linking cities and world capitals."

He indicated that operating these routes represents a boost to the presence of European carriers at Baghdad Airport, stressing the need to develop the airport to meet the requirements of global airlines.
