Arrests of those involved in violation of the U.S. flag during "Sovereignty Day" celebrations
The Commander-in-Chief's spokesman: competent authorities have arrested those involved and officials will be held accountable; an investigative committee has been formed to examine the circumstances of the incident.
The spokesman for the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Sabah al-Nu'man, announced on Sunday the arrest of those involved in the violation of the U.S. flag during the Sovereignty Day celebration.
Al-Nu'man said in a statement: "Pursuant to the orders of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, the competent authorities have arrested those involved in the violation against the U.S. flag in Baghdad, which accompanied one of the displays during the 'Sovereignty Day' events, and there is confirmation that anyone proven to be involved in this act will be held accountable and legal measures will be taken against them in accordance with Iraqi laws and diplomatic norms."
He added: "The government affirms that respecting the symbols of states and friendly diplomatic missions accredited in Iraq represents a legal and diplomatic obligation, and that any violation or insult in this regard will be subject to legal accountability."
A short while ago, al-Nu'man announced that an order had been issued by Commander-in-Chief Ali al-Zaidi to form an investigative committee to ascertain the circumstances of the violation that accompanied one of the displays during the 'Sovereignty Day' events, concerning the flag of the United States of America.
