University of Buenos Aires awards Lionel Messi an honorary doctorate by unanimous council vote

The University of Buenos Aires announced that its governing council unanimously approved awarding Argentine star Lionel Messi an honorary doctorate in recognition of his sporting career and his significant impact representing his country.

The university said that the career of the Argentina captain represents "a model of excellence, perseverance, humility and ethical conduct."

The university added that awarding an honorary doctorate is an established tradition among leading higher-education institutions; it is the highest honor the university bestows and allows the recognition of individuals whose achievements and impact extend beyond their professional fields.

University president Ricardo Gelpi said Messi represents "a model and an ambassador of our popular culture and our national identity," referring to the status he holds within Argentina after a career full of achievements.

Messi is scheduled to receive the honor next Tuesday, before his farewell match with the Argentine national team against Benin at the Monumental stadium in the capital Buenos Aires, which will represent his final appearance in his national team's shirt.

Messi led Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title in Qatar, and also won the Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024, in addition to the Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Games.
