NASA is preparing to ramp up purchases of rocket launch services as part of its efforts to carry out its ambitious program to establish a permanent base on the Moon, at an estimated cost of about $30 billion, according to Bloomberg.
The agency reported that NASA is preparing to announce a broad plan to secure a large number of launches needed to support its lunar program, which aims to transport equipment, cargo and essential supplies to the lunar surface in preparation for a permanent human presence there.
The move comes as the space sector faces increasing pressure on launch capacity amid rising demand and a shortage of available rockets, and NASA, according to Bloomberg, seeks to ensure availability of the launches needed to avoid any delays in carrying out its lunar plans.
NASA has not yet decided which rockets it will rely on under its new plan, but available options on the market remain limited.
