Barzani: Implementing the Nechirvan–Hadi Agreement "Is a Good Thing"; Otherwise We'll Reconsider Our Position

Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani said Sunday evening that implementing the agreement signed between the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, and the secretary‑general of the Badr Organization, Hadi al‑Amiri, would be a good thing, noting that failure to implement it would lead them to consider the position they would take.

He said this during a speech at the closing ceremony of the 20th training course of the Kurdistan Democratic Party Cadre Preparation Institute, held in Erbil.

"If this agreement is implemented, it is a good thing; if they do not implement it, we will consider what position we will take," Barzani said during the ceremony.

In discussing the need to boost self‑confidence among Kurds, Barzani said: "If we do not rely on ourselves, no one will protect us," directing his remarks to party cadres: "Plant this faith and confidence in every Kurdish individual."

Barzani also touched on the history and necessity of founding the Kurdistan Democratic Party, saying: "The party was founded in an extremely sensitive and difficult period for the Kurdish people, but the party did not allow despair to settle; rather it restored hope to the conscience and souls of every Kurdish individual."

In discussing the September Revolution, he said: "The September Revolution, led by the immortal Barzani, was a revolution for the entire Kurdish nation, and Kurds from all parts of Kurdistan participated in it. Also, were it not for the help of our brothers in the north and west, we would not have been able to continue the Gulan revolution."

He added: "The Kurdistan Democratic Party has conveyed the national truth to all parts of Kurdistan and instilled self‑confidence, and that is the truth."

On the current situation in the region, Barzani said the situation is extremely sensitive and no one knows where it is heading, noting the outbreak of the large war last February and that the Kurdistan Region and its people were largely spared and protected from a great calamity and evil.

Regarding relations with neighboring countries, he affirmed: "We want to have the best relations; we are not enemies of Iran, nor of Turkey, nor of any other country," expressing the wish that the war end, be removed from the region, and that peace prevail.

"As for relations with the federal government, our relations are good at the moment, and we demand our rights according to the constitution; we do not ask for more than what is in the constitution, and we will not accept less than what it stipulates," Barzani said.

The agreement signed between the President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, and the head of the Al‑Fatah Alliance, Hadi al‑Amiri, representing the Coordination Framework, is a political agreement reached before the formation of the current federal government. It concerns a number of files related to the relationship between Baghdad and Erbil, including political partnership, the region's constitutional rights, Article 140, and the oil and gas law.
