Confirmed Ebola cases in Congo top 10,000; cases reported in Kenya and Nigeria
The Congolese Institute of Public Health recorded 10,060 cases and 4,887 deaths of the Bundibugyo strain; Kenya reported nine cases and Nigeria one, and authorities are investigating an infection of a Swiss diplomat’s wife.

Confirmed Ebola cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo have exceeded ten thousand, according to data from the Congolese Institute of Public Health cited by Reuters on Tuesday.
The data showed 10,060 cases and 4,887 deaths linked to the Bundibugyo strain, which the report described as the largest and most severe outbreak the country has seen.
Cases recorded outside Congo have raised regional concerns; Kenya reported nine cases, while Nigeria announced one case linked to this outbreak.
Health authorities are investigating how the wife of a Swiss diplomat, who had not traveled to Congo, became infected. The couple were transferred to hospitals in Switzerland. Authorities continue to trace contacts and assess the possibility of cross-border transmission.
Case detection, isolation of patients, contact monitoring, and strengthened prevention measures are considered key elements of virus control. Recorded cases outside Congo alone cannot be taken as conclusive evidence of widespread transmission in all affected countries; risks depend on the results of epidemiological investigations and subsequent health assessments.
