Lufthansa said a flight bound from Frankfurt to Lisbon was forced to divert to the French city of Lyon after a portable charging battery in a passenger's possession ignited.

The incident occurred on Saturday aboard an Airbus A321-200 carrying 198 passengers en route to the Portuguese capital.

A company spokesperson said crew members dealt with the incident immediately, placing the battery in a protective bag designed for lithium batteries, and confirmed that no injuries were reported.

He added that the captain decided to divert the flight to Lyon as a precautionary measure.

Passengers resumed their journey to Lisbon on Sunday after spending the night in a hotel.

The airline said that "the safety of passengers and crew is its top priority."

Since January, Lufthansa has banned the use or charging of external batteries on its aircraft, while still permitting passengers to carry up to two batteries in the cabin under specified safety conditions.
