Travel requirements to Turkey for Iraqis 2026: Who needs a visa and what documents are required?

Al-Wasat Iraqi newspaper — Last update of the information: 24 September 2026

Procedures for travel to Turkey for Iraqis in general depend on three things: the traveler's age, the type of passport, and the purpose of the trip. While some categories are exempt from a visa, others must submit an electronic application under specific conditions or obtain a visa through the consular route.

In this guide we review the rules published by the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the documents listed in the application lists for Iraq, to help travelers choose the appropriate procedure before arranging their trip.

Does an Iraqi need a visa to enter Turkey?

According to the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the rule for a holder of a regular Iraqi passport varies by age:

Category of traveler — Published rule Under 15 years — Exempt from visa for up to 90 days within each 180‑day period From 15 to 50 years — Requires a visa Over 50 years — Exempt from visa for up to 90 days within each 180‑day period Holder of an Iraqi official passport — Exempt for up to 90 days within each 180‑day period

The ministry uses the phrase "over 50 years," so one should verify whether the exemption applies according to date of birth and date of entry, especially at the boundaries between age categories. These rules do not replace travel requirements related to work or study.

E‑visa: available under conditions and not for all travelers

The Turkish e‑Visa portal includes Iraq among the nationalities that can apply if they meet the required criteria. Verification begins by selecting nationality, travel document type and arrival date on the official site, then reading the conditions shown for the application before payment.

One of the conditions for Iraqi applicants on the electronic route is holding a valid visa or residence permit from the Schengen area, the United States, the United Kingdom, or Ireland, in addition to meeting other conditions displayed by the system. Holding only a Gulf residency is not to be considered a substitute for the specified supporting document.

The portal states that the validity of the supporting document must cover the date of entry into Turkey, and that e‑visas issued by other countries are not accepted as a supporting document according to the published instructions. Anyone holding a digital document instead of a traditional visa or residence card must confirm its acceptance with official support before payment.

Tourist visa and visiting relatives: what documents are required?

Those who need a visa and do not meet the electronic route conditions must apply via the consular route and the relevant application center.

The list for tourism and visiting family and friends published on the Gateway International site for Iraq includes the following basic documents:

  • A passport valid for at least six months.
  • National identity card.
  • Family registration document or residence card, as applicable in the list.
  • A recent biometric photo with a white background.
  • Accommodation information and travel arrangements, depending on the nature of the trip.
  • Proof of employment, study, retirement, or source of livelihood, according to the applicant's status.

If staying with a relative in Turkey, the list includes documents proving their identity and address, and a copy of their valid residence permit if they are Iraqi. Proof-of-employment documents differ between an employee, a company owner, and a self‑employed person. This is a short list; the full list should be checked before the appointment.

Business visa: the invitation explains the reason for the visit and who will cover its costs

Visits by companies and for business meetings differ from traveling to work for a Turkish employer.

According to the commercial visa list for Iraq, the file requires a certified invitation from the company in Turkey that includes the visit dates, purpose, accommodation details and the party who will bear expenses, in addition to appropriate personal and professional documents for the applicant.

If the invitation does not include accommodation information, documents related to lodging and a travel plan are requested according to the published list.

Study visa: admission is an essential element

The student visa file must include an acceptance letter or student document issued by the university or educational institution in Turkey, signed and stamped or electronically verifiable. The application list indicates the need to include the acceptance letter with the identifier "YÖK ID."

In addition to that, the passport and required personal documents and photos, and financial support documents or a sponsor when applying as a student are required. Obtaining a university acceptance does not automatically mean the visa will be issued.

Medical visa: reports and medical invitation are the basis of the file

The medical visa list requires prior medical reports concerning the health condition in Iraq, and a medical invitation signed and stamped by the institution that will provide treatment in Turkey.

When there are accompanying persons, their full names must be listed in the invitation. The published list mentions the possibility of bringing up to two companions, with the need to confirm requirements at application depending on the case.

Travel to work requires special procedures

The Turkish Foreign Ministry explains that work requires a specific visa route and a work permit, with the employer participating in completing procedures with the relevant Turkish authorities. Therefore a tourist visa or business visit does not authorize employment or working inside the country.

Is it required that the passport remain valid for six months?

One should distinguish between the visa file requirement and the general entry requirement. The application lists mentioned request validity of no less than six months, while the general rule for entry states that the passport must extend at least 60 days beyond the permitted period of stay.

For example: if the permitted stay is 90 days, the general minimum passport validity at entry would be 150 days. But this example does not waive the six‑month requirement at submission if the center's list requests it.

What about transit in Turkish airports?

According to the e‑Visa portal, a visa is not required if staying within the international transit area without leaving it.

If the trip requires passing through passport control to collect luggage or transfer to another airport, the applicable entry requirements for the traveler must be checked in advance, and transit arrangements confirmed with the airline.

When is it recommended to apply?

The Turkish Foreign Ministry recommends applying for a visa at least one month before travel to avoid processing delays, and clarifies that issuing a visa does not automatically guarantee entry, and that visa fees are non‑refundable if the application is refused. Its general guidance also states having medical insurance that covers the duration of stay.

This guide does not depend on a unified visa fee; fees and service charges must be confirmed when applying, distinguishing them from insurance costs and additional services.
