British prime minister announces sending air defence systems and Voyager plane to Saudi Arabia
Andy Burnham said air defence systems and a Voyager aircraft were sent to Saudi Arabia to support its battles against Ansar Allah (the Houthis), and that the Voyager has completed 14 operational missions.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham confirmed on Monday that air defence systems and a Voyager aircraft have been sent to Saudi Arabia to support Saudi efforts in confronting Ansar Allah (the Houthis) in Yemen.
Burnham said in press remarks that the Voyager sent to Saudi Arabia has carried out 14 operational missions so far, and added that the military assistance is necessary to protect civilians.
The announcement comes amid an unprecedented military escalation in Yemen since last October, with wide-scale ground clashes and renewed reciprocal regional strikes between Yemeni government forces and the Saudi-led coalition.
In the context of the confrontations, the Houthi group launched twin missile attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, killing 12 and injuring more than 300.
The attacks prompted Saudi authorities to suspend operational activity at the airport, with a decision to extend its closure.
