The U.S. State Department affirmed on Thursday its support for Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s efforts to consolidate Iraqi sovereignty.
State Department spokesman Tommy Beghot said: "The United States successfully completed the withdrawal of its forces from Iraq by September 30, which fully aligns with the timeline previously agreed with the Iraqi Federal Government."
Beghot explained that this withdrawal "reflects the growth and development of the capabilities of the Iraqi security forces and the Peshmerga forces in the Kurdistan Region, and also represents opening a new and important chapter in the bilateral relations between Iraq and the United States."
The U.S. spokesman stressed his country's commitment "to building a strong and solid security and economic partnership with the Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government."
He affirmed "the United States' support for Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi's efforts to consolidate and exercise Iraqi sovereignty, at a time when Iraq, under its leadership and in the framework of a full partnership with the United States, is moving steadily toward a new phase and path."
