Al‑Aboudi: Prime Minister to present Iraq's vision on regional security and economy at the UN

Government spokesman Haider Al‑Aboudi said on Tuesday that Prime Minister Ali Falih Al‑Zaidi will present Iraq’s vision on the region’s security and economy to the United Nations, noting that Iraq and the United States are keen to develop their partnership and elevate it to a distinguished strategic level.

Al‑Aboudi said, “The delegation of the Republic of Iraq, headed by Prime Minister Ali Falih Al‑Zaidi, arrived in New York and began its visit in preparation to participate in the opening of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.”

He added that “the delegation began its activities with a meeting with the US Secretary of State, during which the two sides discussed the level of bilateral cooperation and ways to develop the partnership,” noting that “the US Secretary of State affirmed Washington’s keenness to sustain the relationship with Baghdad and elevate it to a distinguished strategic level.”

He pointed out that “the Prime Minister stressed the importance of bridging this relationship through economic and investment partnerships, attracting American companies to develop the oil industry, in addition to carrying out a number of important projects.”

Al‑Aboudi noted that “the talks also addressed regional developments and their repercussions and the impact of events on their economies,” affirming that “Iraq is keen to find sustainable diplomatic solutions that contribute to securing energy supplies and crude oil supply chains to global markets.”

He explained that “Iraq is one of the most important suppliers of crude oil to the global market, and that the government aspires, according to its vision and program, to raise Iraq’s daily crude oil production to 10 million barrels by 2030.”

He continued that “the visit’s agenda also included receiving the Lebanese prime minister at the prime minister’s residence, as well as a meeting with the Secretary‑General of the Arab League,” explaining that “the Iraqi delegation headed by the Prime Minister will head tomorrow to the UN General Assembly headquarters to participate in the opening of its 81st session, as well as hold meetings with the UN Secretary‑General and a number of prime ministers, heads of state and international officials.”

He affirmed that “Iraq will participate in the work of the General Assembly with its vision and message to the world, particularly regarding regional developments and their security and economic conditions.”

Al‑Aboudi explained that “the visit also comes within the framework of completing what was achieved during the Prime Minister’s visit to Washington in mid‑July, which witnessed the establishment of a new identity for the relationship between the two countries, especially as Iraq approaches the September 30 deadline set for the end of the presence of the international coalition forces.”

He noted that “Iraq is moving to shift its relationship with the United States from the security sphere to sustainable economic relations.”
