Court Sentences Activist Alaa al-Bukhathri to Six Months in Basra

A source familiar with the matter said on Monday that a six-month prison sentence was issued against activist Alaa al-Bukhathri in Basra governorate, after his detention for more than two months in connection with protests and events that targeted the Kuwaiti consulate building.

The source said the sentence came in connection with the events that accompanied the protests in front of the consulate in Basra, which erupted following an incident that killed an Iraqi fisherman and injured others as a result of gunfire that the parties involved in the incident attributed to the Kuwaiti Coast Guard.

The source also noted that the arrests included, in a separate context, retired officer Ali Shiaa, who recently appeared on social media platforms drawing attention to sensitive issues in society, including murder, abduction and other cases.
