8-year sentence for projects accounts officer in Dhi Qar governorate in bribery case

The Dhi Qar Criminal Court issued prison sentences for three employees in the governorate office after convicting them of receiving a 10 million-dinar bribe from a contractor to release his payments, a security source said.

Sentences range from 6 to 8 years

The source said the sentences issued against the three employees ranged between 6, 7 and 8 years, with the harshest—an 8-year prison term—given to the projects accounts officer in the governorate office. The source added that the convicts were arrested in the act and that the rulings were issued based on the provisions of Decision No. 160 of 1983 of the dissolved Revolutionary Command Council.

Caught red-handed inside the governorate office

The Federal Integrity Commission had announced on Thursday, October 22, that a team from its Dhi Qar investigation office went to the governorate office and managed to catch the director of the accounts department and another department employee red-handed while they were receiving the bribe from a contractor in exchange for processing his payment.

Payments for a project in Al-Nasr district

The commission said at the time that the defendants obstructed completion of the payment process for a contractor who had carried out a project in Al-Nasr district, despite the contractor having completed all procedures and repeatedly visiting the governorate office. It added that the judge of the investigative court for integrity cases in Dhi Qar ordered the defendants detained under the provisions of Article 308 of the Penal Code to complete legal proceedings.
