The director-general of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Abdullah Aati Abdullah, announced on Saturday that the breakwater works at the Grand Faw Port have been completed in full, at 100%.
Abdullah said at a press conference that progress on the port’s main project has been notable, with the submerged tunnel 98% complete and infrastructure works reaching 94%.
He said work continues to complete the remaining stages and to prepare to move on to constructing the superstructures, stressing that these stages represent an important step in completing the project, and that the progress was achieved with the support of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaydi and Minister of Transport Wahab al-Hasani and through the efforts of technical and engineering personnel and the contracting companies.
He indicated that the authorities overseeing the project expect to carry out operational tests for the port during the coming period, while continuing to complete current projects.
Regarding the movement of Iraqi ports, Abdullah explained that the fallout from the Strait of Hormuz crisis affected navigation in the region generally, and affirmed that measures continue to enhance cargo handling, expand storage capacities and work to gradually restore activity.
He described the Grand Faw Port as one of the most prominent strategic projects in Iraq’s maritime transport sector, noting the expected contribution it will make to strengthening Iraq’s commercial and logistical capacities and supporting its position in regional and international maritime transport.
