Six-hour talks in Miami to discuss proposal to end the war in Ukraine

Negotiators from the United States, Ukraine and European countries held six-hour talks in the US city of Miami on Friday, aiming to agree on a unified proposal to end the war in Ukraine, according to a person familiar with the talks who asked not to be identified.

The source said the aim is to agree on this proposal in the coming weeks in order to present it to Russia, seeking a political breakthrough before winter.

The Miami talks included US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, along with delegations from Ukraine and representatives of European countries and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

The source added that the negotiators discussed a wide range of issues related to the post-war phase, including a support package for Ukraine that would include security guarantees from the United States and European countries.

The talks also covered an economic plan to rebuild Ukraine after the war, as well as discussion of Kyiv's path to joining the European Union.

On an issue the source described as "sensitive," the delegations discussed "some ideas" related to territory, without providing further details.

The source also said the delegations discussed a concept for a security architecture between Europe and Russia that would cement stability and pave the way for years of peace in the future, without disclosing additional details.

These discussions come amid the stagnation of diplomatic efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has been ongoing since February 2022, despite repeated attempts to launch a negotiating track that would lead to a political settlement.

In recent months the United States and European countries have stepped up efforts to find a negotiating framework that could pave the way for a ceasefire and a lasting agreement to end the conflict.

While Ukraine insists that Russia relinquish territory it took control of during the war, U.S. President Donald Trump says that reaching a peace deal will require concessions from both sides.
