Iraq has assumed the chairmanship of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) group at the United Nations in New York, represented by its permanent representative, Ambassador Luqman Abdul Rahim Al‑Faily, succeeding Turkey’s permanent representative, Ambassador Ahmed Yildiz, during a group meeting held at UN headquarters on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday.

Meeting attended by ambassadors of member states

The meeting was attended by a number of ambassadors and representatives of OIC member states to the United Nations, and Al‑Faily used the occasion to thank the Turkish presidency for its efforts during its term leading the group.

Iraq's priorities for the group's presidency

Al‑Faily affirmed Iraq’s keenness to strengthen cooperation and coordination among member states and to unify positions on issues of common interest, and said that during its presidency Iraq is committed to supporting the causes of the Muslim world, foremost among them the Palestinian cause.

He indicated that the Iraqi presidency will work to bolster Islamic solidarity and to activate multilateral action in ways that serve the common interests of member states and contribute to consolidating international peace and security.
