Nutrition expert warns of reduced availability of protein and iron in plant-based diets

Russian nutrition expert Elena Solomatina warned that some nutrients in plant-based products may be less bioavailable compared with their counterparts in animal products, and she focused on the importance of getting sufficient amounts of protein and iron.

Solomatina said that the protein found in animal products is characterized by higher bioavailability, noting that the human body needs this nutrient continuously.

She explained that protein is an essential component of the body, contributing to the build-up of muscles, skin and hair, and forming part of enzymes, blood vessels and joints, and it also supports immune system functions.

The expert warned that following a plant-based diet that does not provide children's dietary protein needs could negatively affect their normal growth and overall health, because children's bodies in growth stages need adequate amounts of this nutrient.

She also stressed the importance of supplying older adults with enough protein, explaining that its deficiency can increase the risk of loss of muscle mass known as "sarcopenia," and raise the likelihood of falls and fractures.

Regarding women of childbearing age, Solomatina pointed out that they are more prone to iron deficiency, and that the iron found in meat is usually absorbed more efficiently than that in plant sources, warning that iron deficiency can lead to anemia, and in severe cases may be associated with risks to pregnancy and fetal health.
